Writing Assignment: What I did on my summer vacation.
Welcome back UTEA! And what did you do on your summer vacation? As always, I was very busy doing what I love — working for you, our 850+ members of the Union Township Education Association. June 29, I started my “vacation” in Washington, DC at the NEA Board of Directors Meetings and the national conference (RA).
I was happy to join 30+ Union County members, but so proud of our UTEA delegates: Rich D’Avanzo, James Frazier, Patty Guerra-Frazier & John Zurka. All of you should experience an RA. Mark your calendars, because the first week of July, 2017, we’re off to Boston!
The week after, Rich, Diego Alvear and I, returned to DC to lobby the NJ legislators on Standardized Testing, Childhood Nutrition, etc. There were 20+ NJEA members visiting both Senators and all 12 members of Congress from NJ. In fact, our own Congressman Leonard Lance was our keynote speaker. Please remember that he, and Congressman Payne, who both represent Union, are on our side and continue to fight for our educational issues.
But, it didn’t end in July. On August 1, Nancy Lucas-Miller and I attended a pension rally in Trenton, and then came the NJEA Summer Leadership Conference. You should be inspired by the dedication of your UTEA Leadership – 16 people attended workshops on negotiations, community organizing and more. A big thank you to:
Diego Alvear (UHS) Sharon Ciaglia (K) Terry Cucciniello (B) Rich D’Avanzo (B) Meghan DeLuca (B) Maureen Dreher (UHS) Jill Fischman (UHS) James Frazier (B) Patty Frazier (B) Justin Meyer (UHS) Nancy Miller (UHS) Mike Riley (W) Cathy Sharp (HC) Danielle Stabler (K) SuzanneWhitley (UHS)
Rich & I attended many Bd of Ed meetings and have created a solid partnership with Mr. Tatum, Mrs. Moses, and Mr. Benaquista; UTEA is at the table. There are great changes in our future – including upgraded technology and a Negotiations
Have a great school year!

James Frazier of Union Township was recently elected a member of the National Education Association’s Board of Directors. He has been an invaluable member of the Union Township community as a security officer in the Union Township public schools for over nineteen years and is currently President of the Union Township Education Association.
“I’m excited to roll my sleeves up and get to work because I really do enjoy working on behalf of students and fellow educators,” said Frazier. “I am honored to have the opportunity to shape and influence policies that benefit our students and all Educators, including Secretaries, Paraprofessional, Custodial/ Maintenance and Security; all Essential School Professionals in our communities.”
In his role as a member of the NEA Board of Directors, James will advocate on behalf of educators and students in Washington,DC. and across the nation. I know that he’ll be a great advocate for New Jersey!
